Jackson Chourio's Heroics Give Brewers Commanding 2-0 NLDS Lead Over Padres
The Milwaukee Brewers are two wins away from the National League Championship Series after Jackson Chourio delivered a walk-off two-run single in the ninth inning to defeat the San Diego Padres 4-3 in Game 2 of their NLDS matchup Sunday at American Family Field.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, the 20-year-old outfielder ripped a single off Padres closer Mason Miller that scored two runs and sent the home crowd into a frenzy. The Brewers now hold a commanding 2-0 series lead as the best-of-five series shifts to San Diego for Game 3.
Miller, the All-Star closer who had worked a clean eighth inning on 12 pitches, saw his command evaporate in the ninth. He walked three consecutive batters to load the bases before Chourio stepped to the plate and made him pay.
The dramatic finish capped another exceptional playoff game between two evenly matched teams. San Diego struck first in the opening inning when Manny Machado walked with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and eventually scored off Brewers rookie Logan Harrison.
For Chourio, it was the second consecutive game he played postseason hero. In Game 1 on Saturday night, the young star hit a two-run home run to tie the game early, opening the door for William Contreras's eventual game-winning solo shot in Milwaukee's 3-2 victory.
Miller's attempt at a six-out save ultimately failed as the Padres' bullpen strategy backfired in crucial moments. Manager Craig Stammen had turned to his elite closer for the final two innings, but Miller threw a season-high in pitches and couldn't locate the strike zone when it mattered most.
The Brewers' bullpen, by contrast, locked down the middle innings to keep the game within reach. Milwaukee's pitching staff has now held San Diego to just five runs across the first two games of the series.
The series now moves to Petco Park in San Diego for Game 3 on Tuesday night. The Padres face elimination as they return home, needing to win three consecutive games to advance. No team has ever recovered from an 0-2 deficit in a best-of-five Division Series since the current playoff format was implemented.
For the Brewers, the formula has been simple: timely hitting from their young stars and shutdown pitching from the bullpen. If that continues in San Diego, Milwaukee will be playing for a pennant by week's end.
Chourio, who turned 20 in March, is quickly becoming one of October's emerging stars. His composure in high-leverage situations has drawn comparisons to postseason veterans twice his age. The question now is whether San Diego's offense can finally solve Milwaukee's pitching staff before their season slips away.
