Rays Force Game 5 With Walk-Off Win in 12 Innings as Brewers' Championship Bid Waits

Tampa Bay scored twice in the bottom of the 12th to deny Milwaukee a World Series sweep and extend the series to Game 5.

Rays Force Game 5 With Walk-Off Win in 12 Innings as Brewers' Championship Bid Waits

The Milwaukee Brewers stood one win away from their second World Series title in franchise history. They led the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 in the series. They had a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 12th inning at Tropicana Field on Monday night.

Then the Rays scored twice to walk it off, 4-3, forcing a Game 5 and denying Milwaukee the championship sweep that felt inevitable just three outs earlier.

The Game 4 thriller was the kind of postseason baseball that reminds everyone why October matters. The Brewers appeared to have delivered the decisive blow when they scored in the top of the 12th to take a 3-2 lead, putting themselves three outs from the title.

But the Rays had other plans. In the bottom half of the inning, Tampa Bay rallied for two runs to snatch victory from the jaws of elimination and bring the series back to Milwaukee for Game 5 on Wednesday.

Walk-Off Win Extends Tampa Bay's Season

The dramatic finish at Tropicana Field gave the Rays life in a series where they had been thoroughly outplayed through three games. Milwaukee won Game 1, Game 2, and Game 3 by a combined score of 24-6, dominating both sides of the ball against a Tampa Bay team that looked overmatched.

Game 4 changed that narrative. The Rays held the Brewers scoreless for 11 innings, trading zeroes with Milwaukee's pitching staff in a tense defensive battle that finally cracked open in the 12th.

When the Brewers pushed across a run in the top of the 12th, it looked like the inevitable conclusion. Three outs to go. A championship 60 feet away from the mound.

Instead, the Rays delivered the kind of comeback that shifts momentum in a playoff series. The two-run rally in the bottom of the 12th electrified the home crowd and sent the champagne back into storage for at least two more days.

Brewers Still Hold Series Lead

Milwaukee still leads the World Series 3-1 and needs just one win in the next two games to claim the title. Game 5 returns to American Family Field in Milwaukee on Wednesday night, giving the Brewers home-field advantage for the potential clincher.

If necessary, Game 6 would be played in Milwaukee on Thursday, with Game 7 back at Tropicana Field on Friday. But the Brewers would much prefer to close it out in front of their home fans on Wednesday and avoid giving Tampa Bay any more opportunities to extend the series.

The Rays, meanwhile, have bought themselves at least one more game. The question now is whether Monday night's walk-off win can spark the kind of three-game winning streak they need to complete the most improbable comeback in World Series history.

No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win the World Series. The Rays now have a chance to make history, but they will have to do it in Milwaukee, where the Brewers are undefeated this postseason.

Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:08 PM ET on Fox.
